McKinney Boyd continues baseball turnaround with 10-5A win over Plano

McKINNEY — A year ago, McKinney Boyd finished with a losing record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2009. But with a fifth straight win Tuesday night, the Broncos continued a turnaround that looks destined for the playoffs.

Led by strong defense and a complete game by senior pitcher Zach Rubel, Boyd beat Plano, 5-3, to take sole possession of first place in District 10-5A.

“This district is loaded with talent,” Boyd coach Brooke Court said. “It’s good to get out and get these wins when we can take them.”

Rubel allowed seven hits for Boyd (17-2-1, 3-0), which had only four hits but manufactured runs with the help of seven walks and three errors by Plano (12-9-1, 2-1).

Boyd loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs —or hits. A Plano fielding error, a hit batter and a walk set the table for a three-run inning. The only hit of the inning was a big one, as Jason Reitmeier’s two-out, two-run single up the middle gave Boyd a 3-0 lead.

Boyd extened its lead to 4-0 before Plano battled back for two runs in the fourth. Francisco DeJesus’ double down the line gave Boyd a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Plano trimmed the lead to 5-3 on A.J. Liu’s two-out RBI single in the seventh, but with the tying run at the plate, Rubel got Ryan Robertson to fly out to second.
