After falling to Whitehouse in first game, Frisco Liberty baseball must win two in a row (again) to advance
ALLEN – Frisco Liberty finds itself in a familiar spot.
After dropping game one of its Class 4A Region II championship series to Whitehouse, 6-0, on Thursday, Liberty needs to rally for two wins this weekend.
Liberty previously earned back-to-back wins against Forney in the bi-district round. It also survived a three-game series against Frisco Centennial in the quarterfinals.
Robby Evans will take the mound for Liberty to start game two at 7 p.m. Friday at Tyler Junior College.
“We’ve been here before,” Liberty coach Scott McGarrh said. “We’ve just got to play better.”
There is plenty of room to improve on the defensive front. Liberty committed seven errors, including three in Whitehouse’s five-run fifth inning.
Whitehouse got its leadoff batter on base three times courtesy of an error, and twice that runner crossed the plate.
“We played a little timid, and that’s not who we are,” McGarrh said. “But all those kids that were in the infield tonight will be out in the infield tomorrow.”
Whitehouse pitcher Patrick Mahomes, the son of former major leaguer Pat Mahomes, tossed a complete game shutout. He surrendered just three hits and struck out seven. Liberty never moved a runner past second base.
Liberty batters were aggressive at the plate and looked for first-pitch fastballs from Mahomes. Instead, Mahomes opened with breaking pitches and changeups. He needed only 13 pitches in the first two innings.
“This is the first team that I’ve played in a while that’s swung at me so much,” said Mahomes, who is committed to Texas Tech as a quarterback. “It was probably my best performance this year. I usually walk guys and I had no walks tonight.”
Mahomes went 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk.
Ryan Cheatham is the No. 2 pitcher for Whitehouse, and he’s been an effective starter behind Mahomes. Whitehouse has yet to lose a game in the postseason.
“It seems like every time I pitch, (Cheatham) comes in the next day and pitches better,” Mahomes said.
