Baseball playoff roundup: Arl. Martin sweeps Hurst L.D. Bell; Frisco Liberty advances
Seventh-inning rally moves Martin into Class 5A Region I final
FORT WORTH — Arlington Martin punched its ticket to the Class 5A Region I final Saturday, rallying for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 4-3 win over Hurst L.D. Bell at TCU’s Lupton Stadium.
Drew Dowdy ended the game with a two-run double off the wall in right field as Martin swept the best-of-3 series. Martin (34-7-1) will play Southlake Carroll in the regional final.
L.D. Bell’s Leo Ocampo and Sydney Daley drove in runs in the second for a 2-0 lead, but Martin tied it in the fourth. L.D. Bell’s Caleb Rose scored in the fifth on a throwing error.
In other regional semifinals:
Frisco Liberty 8, Mansfield Legacy 7: In Prosper, a six-run top of the fifth propelled Frisco Liberty to a two-game sweep of Mansfield Legacy in a 4A Region II semifinal. Liberty (26-10-2), making its first playoff appearance, will play Whitehouse in the regional final.
After two were out in the fifth inning, consecutive bases-loaded walks were issued to Trey Johnson and Cole Parker. Austin Miller hit a two-run single, followed by RBI singles from JT VanGelder and Clay Crews as Liberty jumped to an 8-3 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Legacy’s first three batters scored, and it had the tying run aboard before relief pitcher Josh Ryan struck out two consecutive batters. Ryan picked up the save, striking out seven in three innings. He closed the game with three consecutive strikeouts.
Liberty’s 7-8-9 hitters combined for five RBIs and three runs.
Whitehouse 8, Prosper 7: In McKinney, Ryan Cheatham’s walk with the bases loaded in the top of fifth drove in Jared Raabe with the winning run as Whitehouse won Game 2 of the 4A Region II semifinal and swept the series.
Prosper (19-18) scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. Tyler Webb doubled to drive in a run and make it 6-4. After Brandon Grudzielanek walked and Lance Brooks singled to load the bases, Steele Walker hit a three-run double.
But Patrick Mahomes led off the top of the fifth with a single and stole second. Raabe reached on an error, and Derek Clemons singled to score Mahomes. After a walk and a strikeout, Cheatham walked to score Raabe.
Mahomes’ two-run double in the second gave Whitehouse (29-8) a 6-0 lead. Prosper’s Alex Nelon hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second.
Melissa 12, Longview Spring Hill 8: Cory Regan had three RBIs, and Camden Duzenack drove in two as Melissa swept the 3A Region II semifinal series and advanced to play defending 3A state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove. Pleasant Grove beat Princeton, 5-0, in Game 3 of their series.
Lubbock Cooper 6, Kennedale 2: Cooper scored four runs in the eighth to sweep Kennedale (28-9) in a 3A Region I semifinal series. Scotland Church homered and pitched a complete game for Cooper.
