Baseball, softball playoff roundup: Coppell baseball dominates opener; Hebron dealt softball setback
Oklahoma signee Jake Elliott pitched a one-hitter to lead Coppell to a 10-0 win over Colleyville Heritage in Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 5A first-round baseball playoff series Wednesday.
The only hit for Colleyville Heritage in the six-inning game was Cody Thomas’ leadoff double in the top of the first. Thomas, who leads Dallas-area players in home runs with 13, finished 1-for-3.
Jake Plotsky was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Coppell (22-7-1). Tyler Zabojnik and Tyler Jones, both headed to Air Force, had two RBIs apiece, as did Jeremy Mortensen.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Colleyville Heritage.
In other bi-district baseball games:
Flower Mound Marcus 9, Irving Nimitz 0: Brendan Venter homered, and Austyn Laird had three RBIs for Marcus in Game 1 of a 5A series. Jack Cushing pitched six scoreless innings for Marcus, allowing three hits.
Waxahachie 6, Corsicana 3: Sammy Ernst homered as Waxahachie won Game 1 of a best-of-3 4A series.
Waco Midway 5, Hebron 3: Taylor Ellis hit a walk-off two-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning to give Midway the win in Game 1 of a best-of-3 5A area-round series.
Hebron (18-12-2) had a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh and was one out away from winning before Courtney Colunga tied it with an RBI single. Ellis then homered to finish 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Trailing 2-0, Hebron scored three runs in the sixth. Florida signee Chelsea Herndon hit a two-out, two-run single, and Erinn Hill followed with an RBI single.
Both teams made long playoff runs last year. Midway reached the 4A state semifinals before moving up to 5A this season. Hebron was a 5A Region I finalist.
Carrollton Creekview 11, Woodrow Wilson 1: Kira Edmeads went 2-for-2 with a double and triple to help Creekview win a one-game playoff and advance to the 4A Region II quarterfinals. Creekview (16-19) will face the winner of the Molina vs. Frisco Centennial series.
Sydney Walker pitched a two-hitter for Creekview, and Cherie Jackson was 2-for-2.
Aledo 2, Denton Guyer 0: Lauren Craine pitched a three-hit shutout as Aledo won Game 1 of a best-of-3 4A Region I area-round series.
