Baseball/softball replay: Richland wins battle of area softball powers
GAME OF THE DAY
Brooke Noel and Shelby Watson each doubled twice and combined for three RBIs to help Richland rally for a 5-2 win over Keller in a matchup of area-ranked softball teams.
Richland (21-4, 7-0), the No. 3 team in SportsDay’s 5A area rankings, remained alone in first place in District 4-5A. Keller (16-4-1, 5-2), ranked No. 8 in the state and No. 6 in the area, fell two games behind. Keller scored twice in the first, but Richland scored twice in the fourth and then took the lead with two runs in the fifth.
Flower Mound Marcus senior pitcher Hannah Null shut out Coppell on Monday and still hasn’t allowed an earned run this softball season. Null (13-0), an Abilene Christian signee, has a chance to match what Cat Osterman did as a high school senior in Texas, when she finished the 2001 season with a 0.00 ERA for Cypress Springs. Osterman went on to win an Olympic gold medal.
This isn’t the first time a Dallas-area pitcher has made a run at having a 0.00 ERA for an entire season. In 2007, Justin Northwest’s Brittany Barnhill didn’t allow an earned run in her first 213 innings before finishing with a 0.06 ERA.
Null, who has allowed two unearned runs this season, will face a big test Thursday. Marcus (20-0-1, 3-0 District 5-5A), No. 1 in the 5A state rankings and No. 5 in the MaxPreps.com national rankings, will host Flower Mound, the area’s seventh-ranked 5A team.
