Rockwall-Heath's Jake Thompson plans to sign with Detroit on Tuesday
Rockwall-Heath pitcher Jake Thompson will sign with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Thompson will fly to Lakeland, Fla., home of the Tigers' spring-training facility -- to sign his first professional contract, "barring any unforeseen issue," he said in an e-mail to the Free Press.
Thompson was drafted with Detroit's first pick, the 91st overall, in the second round of the MLB First-Year draft Tuesday -- the same day he graduated from Heath. He won his final high school game on Thursday, helping Heath advance to the state final with a 6-3 win over Montgomery in the Class 4A semifinal. Heath went on to win its first state title Friday night.
"I am honored to have been chosen by the Detroit Tigers and am very excited about the opportunity they have given me," Thompson wrote to the Free Press. "Now the hard work begins. I believe I can make it to the Majors and I am determined to get there."
