Baseball roundup: Bushland ousts Brock in 2A semifinals; Texarkana Pleasant Grove advances to state finals

ROUND ROCK — Colter Cornelius reached on an error and scored on a single by Collin Smith in the top of the eighth to give Bushland a 1-0 victory over Brock in a Class 2A baseball state semifinal Wednesday at Dell Diamond.

Brock (33-2), the state’s top-ranked 2A team, managed only two hits against Gerald Reyna (12-0). Reyna struck out six and walked two. Bushland (31-6-1) will play in the championship game at noon Thursday.

Brock’s best scoring chance came in the bottom of the seventh. J.D. Stinnett walked with one out, stole second and reached third with two outs. But a groundout ended the inning.

Shay Phillips (14-1) started for Brock and allowed just an unearned run while striking out 10 in 71/3 innings.

Texarkana Pleasant Grove 4, Robinson 2: Pleasant Grove (34-5) scored four runs in the first inning and beat the state's top-ranked 3A team in a state semifinal. Timothy Buchanan (14-1) allowed two runs in six innings as Pleasant Grove advanced to play West in Thursday's 6:30 p.m. final at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.

West 10, Sweeny 3: Sweeny jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but West scored seven runs over the next three innings en route to a victory in a 3A state semifinal. Mason Paxton was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for West (32-8), and Kolbey Carpenter (11-1) pitched a complete game and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Stamford 4, Dodd City 1: Kyle Barnett (13-0) pitched a six-hitter, and Austin Alvarado was 3-for-4 with an RBI as Stamford (24-1) beat Dodd City (27-8) in a Class A state semifinal. Stamford will play Fayetteville in the title game at 9 a.m. Thursday at Dell Diamond.

Landon Liebel drove in the only run for Dodd City.

Fayetteville 5, Price Carlisle 4: Brandon Canik drew a one-out walk in the top of the seventh and scored the winning run on an error as Fayettville (20-6) won a Class A state semifinal.
