Baseball roundup: Wakeland ousts HP; Martin, Waxahachie advance

GRAND PRAIRIE — Frisco Wakeland got a double from junior Dan Harrington to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-3 victory over Highland Park on Saturday, making it the third consecutive season that Wakeland has eliminated Highland Park in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal Game 3.

Wakeland trailed, 3-0, after the top of the first but got 52/3 innings of scoreless relief from junior Cam Brockhoff and tied the score on a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth. Wakeland (27-10) advanced to play Waxahachie in the Region II semifinals.

“I wouldn’t expect anything different in a series with Highland Park,” Wakeland coach Barry Rose said. “We told the kids that no matter what happens, stay focused on every pitch and see what happens.”

Highland Park (25-12-1) won Game 1, but Wakeland senior Willie Schwanke shut down Highland Park for a 4-2 Wakeland victory in Game 2. In Game 3, Highland Park couldn’t hold its early lead against Wakeland, even with a strong performance from senior pitcher Matthew Milburn.

Highland Park led, 3-0, on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single by Griffin Gaule. Wakeland pulled within, 3-2, in the bottom of the first on back-to-back RBI doubles by Justin Swanner and Seth Mullis.

Highland Park left four runners in scoring position in the first two innings and had a runner thrown out at the plate as Brockhoff limited Highland Park to three hits over the final five innings.

Wakeland tied the score, 3-3, in the fifth after a single by Grant Devoe and a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs. Highland Park got two infield outs without allowing a run, but a slow grounder to third led to a wide throw of first, allowing the tying run to score.

In the bottom of the sixth, a bad-hop single by freshman Johnny Gonzales went over shortstop, and a sacrifice bunt set up Harrington’s game-winning double down the left-field line.
