GAME OF THE DAY
Plano softball stays perfect in District 8-5A
Winning the ultra-rugged District 8-5A won’t be an easy task, but Plano’s softball team made an important step on Friday night, defeating Flower Mound Marcus 3-1.
Plano, which advanced to the state tournament last season, won 8-5A last year. Marcus finished second. Plano is now 4-0 in district play.
Its first run came in the second inning when Tori Seasor doubled, scoring Julia Knight. In the fourth, MacKenzie Velasquez doubled, scoring Knight and Calli Irvin.
“Every game in this district is like a playoff game,” coach Cynthia Zea said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in first place or last place. We all seem to be even and we’re all beating each other up.”
No-hitter for Frisco pitcher Miller
Andrew Miller threw a no-hitter on Friday night in Frisco’s 4-0 victory against Carrollton Newman Smith. Newman Smith had few opportunities to even make contact. Miller struck out 16 and walked six.
He also had a double, along with Frisco’s P.J. Harris.
Another loss for Mesquite Poteet
Mesquite Poteet had not lost a district game since the 2006-07 season, a streak of 59 games, before losing to Waxahachie in late February. Now Poteet is 2-2 in district play after losing to Corsicana 10-0 on Friday night.
Hunter Melton pitched the shutout for Corsicana, 4-0 in district play, and also had a double.
Bishop Lynch scored three runs in the fifth inning, and Andy Alig pitched a shutout as it defeated Prestonwood 5-0. … Michael Fusselman of HSAA had two doubles, a triple and five RBIs in a doubleheader against TCA-Addison. The teams split the games.
