Girls basketball player of the week (1/20): McKinney's Mariah Mitchell
What she did: Mariah Mitchell had back-to-back double-doubles this week. First, she recorded 24 points and 15 rebounds — while adding three assists — on Tuesday in a win over Allen. She added 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists Friday as McKinney beat McKinney Boyd, 58-43.
Who is she? A 5-7 senior guard.
The stats: Mitchell averages 22 points and seven rebounds.
She said it: “I really focus on midrange and trying to get to the rack. When the 3 is open, I’ll take it. … When I feel like my team is attacking and I’m helping on the defensive side, I’ll hit it and take it, but other than that I’m trying to get to the lane and draw fouls, go to the free throw line.”
Coach said it: “I don’t think Mariah is anywhere close to as good of a player as she will be. She gets better and better every year, offensively and defensively. I think the biggest difference in her game is that she’s starting to mature and understand the game.” — Debbie Harris
Did you know? Mitchell has signed to play for Arkansas. … She was involved in the PALS (Peer Assisted Leadership Skills) program, which had her helping younger children in classes and their day-to-day life, and Peace Commissions, which had her providing community service.
