Softball player of the week (5/6): Ennis' Riley Fira

What she did: Fira went 4-for-5 with three home runs and nine RBIs to lead Ennis to a two-game sweep of Royse City in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs. Fira had two hits — both home runs — in Saturday’s series-clinching, 10-3 victory. Ennis (30-2), the state’s third-ranked 4A team, advanced to play Lovejoy in a best-of-3 Region II quarterfinal series that starts Friday.

Who is she? A senior catcher who has signed with UT-Arlington.

The stats: Fira is hitting .488 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs. In the regular season, Fira tied for the Dallas-area lead in RBIs with 58 and tied for fourth in home runs with 10.

She said it: “Hopefully we’ll make it all the way to state, but we’re just going to take it one game at a time.”

Coach said it: “She’s kind of spread [the home runs] out. She’s had the RBIs, but not so many home runs. Maybe they weren’t as aware of her as they probably should have been. … She’s capable of getting into one of those streaks where if you pitch to her, she can hurt you every time.” — Rodney McNeill

Did you know? Fira plans to major in psychology. … Fira was an all-state selection last season after she led Dallas-area players in RBIs with 70 and helped Ennis reach the 4A Region II final.
