Baseball player of the week (4/1): Lovejoy's Logan Michaels

What he did: Michaels threw a nine-inning, two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts and two walks in Lovejoy’s’ 1-0 victory over District 13-4A rival Wylie East. Michaels threw 70 strikes out of 112 pitches to get his second shutout in his last two outings.

Who is he? A 6-2 senior right-handed pitcher, who also serves as DH.

The stats: Michaels has thrown 14 consecutive shutout innings with district wins over Sherman and Wylie East in his last two outings. He’s 5-1 on the season.

He said it: “I don’t throw 90 MPH so I work on location. I use both sides of the plate. I felt good all game. I had a lot of 4-pitch outs all night. I was never thinking I might get taken out.”

Coach said it: “He’s one of those kids who is confident but not cocky. When I first saw him last fall, I could see he had talent, was a good kid and worked every day. I knew that’d he be one of the main guys for us.”— Russell Reichenbach

Did you know? Michaels is a big Michigan fan and went with teammates to the Wolverines’ Sweet 16 victory over Kansas at Cowboys Stadium on Friday. Teammates call him “Rooster” after he picked the Alice in Chains song for his walk-up music to the plate last season. Michaels also played third base last season and to get his bat in the lineup this season he hits for himself when he pitches and often DHs when he’s not on the mound. He has signed to play for Seminole State (Okla.).
