Defensive player of the week (12/3): Skyline's Derrick Dixon
What he did: Dixon made his second interception of the day on the goal line with seven seconds left to preserve Skyline’s 38-33 victory over Spring Westfield in a Class 5A Division I semifinal.
Who he is: A 5-8, 182-pound junior defensive back
The stats: Two interceptions, one forced fumble, 28-yard fumble return for a touchdown
He said it: “When we went over it in practice the other day, [the tight end] was going to run the wheel route, so I anticipated it for a little bit and just started trailing because I knew the quarterback couldn’t really throw that good. He just lobbed it in the air, and I just picked the ball.”
Coach said it: “He’s a good all-around athlete. He could probably play two or three different positions on the field, maybe three of four different positions on the field.” — Reginald Samples
Did you know: Dixon returned an onside kick for a touchdown and forced a fumble last week against Mesquite Horn.
