Softball Player of the Week (4/23): Plano East’s K.K. Stevens

What she did: In a matchup of nationally ranked teams, Stevens hit a grand slam in the third inning and an RBI single in the fifth as Plano East defeated Plano, 8-7. That gave Plano East (28-3, 12-2), No. 17 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association rankings, a district sweep of No. 15 Plano (25-4, 12-2) and the tiebreaker edge needed to earn the No. 1 playoff seed from District 8-5A when the teams finished tied for first.

Who is she? A junior catcher who has orally committed to UT-Tyler.

The stats: Stevens is hitting .351 and is among the Class 5A area leaders with six home runs and 32 RBIs.

She said it: On hitting her grand slam — “My teammates had done their job [getting on base], and I needed to come through for them. I went in there relaxed and had a mind-set that I was going to come out of that with a hit, and I hit it over the fence.”

Coach said it: “She feels pretty good in that situation. She doesn’t overthink it. I was really confident having her at the plate. She’s not real nervous. She’s got cold water in her veins.” — Karen Kalhoefer

Did you know? Stevens has a 4.06 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) and is ranked in the top 9 percent of her class. … She plans to major in mathematics and would like to become a statistician for ESPN or a baseball team.
