Softball player of the week (3/26): Ennis' Riley Fira

What she did: Fira went 6-for-8 with 10 RBIs, eight runs, two home runs and three doubles to lead Ennis — the No. 1 team in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 4A state rankings — to wins over Waxahachie, Terrell and Red Oak. In Saturday’s 12-2 win over 24th-ranked Red Oak, Fira was 2-for-2 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs.

Who she is: A junior catcher who has committed to UT-Arlington. She has started on varsity since she was a freshman.

The stats: Fira is hitting .540, and in 24 games she has 11 home runs, 51 RBIs and 27 runs for Ennis (21-2-1, 9-0 District 15-4A). She leads all area players in RBIs, is second in home runs, and 68 percent of her hits have gone for extra bases.

She said it: “I’ve been working a lot on [hitting]. I’ve been getting in the weight room, building up my muscles, and that’s helped a lot.”
