Girls basketball player of the week (2/20): Highland Park's Kaitlyn Read
What she did: In a Class 4A bi-district game against Frisco Heritage, Read was held scoreless in the first quarter. But she rallied for 23 points in the final three periods, scoring 17 after halftime, to lead Highland Park to a 55-53 win. It was Highland Park’s first playoff win since 2003.
Who she is: A 5-8 junior point guard
The stats: 17 points, seven rebounds per game during the season, and 20 points per game in the playoffs.
She said it: “We’ve finally been able to gain some momentum and put it together on the court. … And to see all our hard work paying off, it’s been awesome.”
Coach said it: “She’s very versatile; she could play all five positions. The move to point guard has been good for us.” — Amy Matlock
Did you know? Read is a three-year starter, but played her
first two seasons as the team’s power forward. … She’s on the staff of the
school’s literary magazine, The Tartan, and is in the photography club. … Read loves to
go to music festivals and is excited about attending Coachella in April.
