Girls basketball player of the week (1/23): Rockwall's Alyssa Lang
What she did: Like she’s done most of the year, Lang had two double-doubles last week, propelling Rockwall to wins over Highland Park and Wylie. She averaged 16 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks in the two wins, which put first-place Rockwall two games ahead in a crowded District 10-4A.
Who is she? A 6-1 senior post
The stats: For the season, Lang is averaging 17 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She is nearing the 1,800-point and 1,500-rebound marks for her career.
She said it: “As it gets closer and closer to the playoffs, we’re getting ready for that, too. We know we need to be playing at our best.”
Coach said it: “In big games, she’s come up with some big rebounds and big shots for us. … She’s just somebody our team looks to. We, at least, want to get the ball through her hands at the end of the game.” — Jill McDill
Did you know? Lang is a four-year starter and a three-year captain. She is signed with Rice. … Lang is such a cult figure in Rockwall that several girls dressed up as her for Halloween — with red wigs to match Lang’s hair. … After home games, it’s not uncommon for Lang to stay and shoot with children. McDill said that after one recent game, Lang stayed 30 minutes doing so.
