Former Arlington star Skyler Ewing first Dallas-Fort Worth position player selected
In a pitcher-heavy draft, Rice’s Skyler Ewing became the first position player chosen in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft.
Ewing, the sixth-round pick of the San Francisco Giants, is a catcher and corner infielder at Rice, and he was a star at Arlington High.
He joins a line of Arlington-area baseball players including Hunter Pence (Arlington High), Vernon Wells (Arlington Bowie) and Michael Choice (Mansfield Timberview).
Ewing’s draft stock rose after a strong season in the Cape Cod League where he hit four home runs and drove in 20 runs for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He also won the Cape Code Baseball League All-Star Game home run contest.
