Kyler Murray lands Gatorade Player of the Year honor
Allen QB is best in Texas: Allen quarterback Kyler Murray has been named the Texas Gatorade player of the year.
The junior has passed for 2,966 yards and 37 touchdowns for Allen (13-0), while rushing for 758 yards and 15 scores. Allen is trying to repeat as the Class 5A Division I state champion, something that hasn’t happened since Midland Lee won two of its three straight titles as a Division I team in 1999 and 2000.
Allen is scheduled to play Spring Westfield (13-0) in the 5A Division I Region II final at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin.
Murray joins a slew of Dallas/Fort Worth-area players to win the award in recent years; nine of the last 11 winners of Gatorade’s award have come from area programs, including Ennis’ Graham Harrell, Kimball’s Demarcus Granger, Highland Park’s Matthew Stafford, Aledo’s Johnathan Gray and Southlake Carroll’s Kenny Hill.
Flower Mound standout commits to LSU: Flower Mound sophomore first baseman Sydney Springfield said she has orally committed to play softball for LSU. She is the second Dallas-area sophomore to commit to LSU, joining Lewisville pitcher Maribeth Gorsuch.
