Allen jumps on Lewisville early in 49-14 win

LEWISVILLE - Their record was unblemished and their victories were impressive. But something wasn't right, Allen coach Tom Westerberg thought.

Too many times this season, he fretted, Allen was forced to overcome an early deficit. Something needed to change.

And it did Friday, when the Eagles scored the first 35 points and defeated Lewisville 49-14 at Goldsmith Stadium.

"We wanted to get up high," said running back Jonathan Williams, "because we knew we would hold them if we put points on the board."

Allen, No. 2 in area 5A rankings, did both and authored a dominant performance. Williams bucked defenders and pirouetted past them while rushing 21 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles' quarterback, Alec Morris, swiveled in the pocket like a gun turret, firing passes to receivers Andrew Rodriguez, Jonathon Lee and Oliver Pierce while throwing for 226 yards and three touchdowns.

Allen's defense, meanwhile, stymied No. 18 Lewisville, extinguishing drives before they materialized.

"We went out there," Rodriguez said, "and did exactly what our game plan was."

By halftime, the Eagles led 35-0, piling one touchdown on another without expending much energy. Lewisville was stunned by Allen's surge. One week before, the Farmers (3-2, 1-1) generated 55 points in an impressive victory over Plano West.

But the Eagles (5-0, 2-0) seemed ready from the outset. After Lewisville fumbled away a punt, Morris connected with Rodriguez on the next play for a nine-yard touchdown as Allen pushed ahead 7-0 with eight minutes, six seconds left in the first quarter.

The Eagles' opening salvo staggered the Farmers, who never recovered. Allen's defense appeared emboldened by the success its offense was experiencing. Possession after possession for Lewisville ended with the same demoralizing result: No points.

By the end, Westerberg mustered a smile and made what was perhaps an understatement.

"We're playing pretty well right now," he said.
