John Fazekas, Mansfield

Notable: Behind Fazekas’ leadership, Mansfield advanced to the state tournament for the first time in school history, finishing 21-6-4. In his 11 seasons at Mansfield, Fazekas has qualified for the playoffs every time.

About Fazekas: He is 187-51-39 in his 11th season at Mansfield. Overall, in 24 years of coaching, he is 331-162-59.

Did you know? Mansfield only returned five players from last year’s roster, but still managed to win the District 5-5A title. Every playoff win in Mansfield’s run to the 5A semis was a one-goal or shoot-out win.

Cooper Whitfield, Mansfield

About Whitfield: A forward on his club team, the Dallas Texans Under-15 Pre-Academy team, Whitfield played sweeper for the 5A state semifinalists, one of three Mansfield freshmen who played significant minutes. The 5-8 freshman became a consistent force in the center of the defense.

Did you know? Whitfield said this was likely his last varsity season, expecting to join the Texans’ Under-16 USSF developmental academy team over the summer. Whitfield said he admires the play of SMU midfielder Aaron Simmons, a 2011 Mansfield graduate.

Carley Phillips, Plano West

Notable: Phillips led Plano West to its fifth state title, and its first since 2007. West (23-3-4) was the third-place team in District 8-5A, but beat district rivals Flower Mound and Flower Mound Marcus en route to the championship.

About Phillips: This was Phillips’ first season as a varsity head coach, replacing former coach Jennifer Grubb. Phillips played for Grubb at West, winning the 2002 title as a freshman and making the state tournament in 2004.

Did you know? Phillips made 78 starts as a four-year letterwoman at SMU. A defender, she was named to the all-Conference USA first or second team three straight seasons (2005-07).

About Dolzine: She started the season on the junior varsity team, but moved up after six JV starts. Dolzine scored six game-winning goals, and helped McKinney Boyd cope with injuries to key seniors Caity Heap (Texas Tech) and Amanda Elertson (Nebraska).

Did you know? She averaged nearly two goals per game in district, earning 10-5A newcomer of the year honors. Her club team, TFC ‘97, won the Region III Premier League West in the fall.
