Softball rankings (4/17): State-ranked teams distance themselves with season winding down

Plus, Plano West falls after losing four of its last five games.

With just over a week remaining until the UIL softball playoffs begin, the Dallas area’s top teams are beginning to distance themselves.

None of the area’s top 20 teams dropped out of the rankings this week, and only two swapped positions after Plano West lost three of its last four games, allowing Hebron to jump it in the 6-6A standings.

The 6A rankings are led by four state-ranked, district frontrunners — Denton Guyer, Keller, Rockwall and Wylie — who are followed by two highly competitive second-place teams in Allen and Southlake Carroll.

The 5A others/rankings held steady, as the area’s top teams in those classifications are now also some of the state’s best. The top four have been especially solid — Forney, Melissa, Frisco Lone Star and Prosper Walnut Grove — so much so that even though Walnut Grove is on a 28-game win streak as a first-year program, it hasn’t been able to crack the top three.
