Baseball/softball replay: Argyle ace just misses no-hitter in win over state’s No. 1 team

Frisco Lone Star nearly has a perfect game; Mesquite beats area-ranked Rockwall on walk-off hit.

Game of the day

Alex D’Angelo came within two outs of a no-hitter, but more importantly he pitched another dominant game as Argyle beat the No. 1 team in the state and moved into a tie for first place in District 7-5A.

D’Angelo allowed just a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh and struck out 12 while throwing 90 pitches in Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Grapevine. Argyle (19-5-2, 10-1), the state’s fifth-ranked 5A baseball team, ended Grapevine’s 10-game winning streak, and sole possession of first in the district will be on the line when the teams meet again Friday at Argyle.

D’Angelo has struck out 28 in 13 innings over his last two starts, and he allowed just one hit in each of those games. Trailing 1-0, Argyle scored three runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Micah Roberts and D’Angelo and a sacrifice bunt by Brodey McConnico.

Argyle added two runs in the seventh with the help of an RBI single by TCU pledge Grady Emerson. Grapevine (25-3, 10-1) had won its last three games by a combined score of 25-2, but it was shut out after scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a walk, a hit batter and an error.

Denton Guyer, ranked No. 19 in the nation in softball by MaxPreps, can clinch the District 5-6A title with a win at McKinney at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Guyer (26-2, 11-1) has won 11 of its last 12 games and has gotten extraordinary seasons from pitcher Finley Montgomery, Oregon signee Kaylynn Jones and Texas State signee Erin Peterson.

Montgomery is 17-1 with a 1.39 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 111 innings. Jones is hitting .452 with 42 runs, 23 RBIs and 22 stolen bases in 28 games, while Peterson is batting .460 with 15 extra-base hits and a team-high 39 RBIs.
