Gosselin: Cowboys need to move on from Greg Hardy next year

SportsDay columnist Rick Gosselin recently hosted a chat to talk all things D-FW sports. Here are some of the highlights:

Question: You have a chance to sign Greg Hardy next year. Do you think that he still commands top dollar, and do you ink him to a long-term deal?

Gosselin: I wouldn't have signed him in the first place. That said, I think the pictures in Deadspin and the subsequent furor over his playing for the Cowboys will reduce his number of options and the money he can command this offseason. Whoever signs him is going to be in for a firestorm. The Cowboys are winless with him in five games and he's not exactly sacking quarterbacks at a Pro Bowl pace. I'd move on.

Question: What happened between Greg Hardy and DeMarcus Lawrence on the sideline exactly?

Gosselin: They had words. Both players shrugged it off afterwards. Chalk it up as frustrations with a seven-game losing streak. Tempers are short on this team, as we discovered with Dez Bryant last week.

Question: What's your take on the Tampa columnist who said Jerry Jones is worse for the NFL than Greg Hardy?

Gosselin: I do place a premium on character. During the 20-plus years I worked the draft, I knew of teams that took players off the board because of character. The Cowboys don't have the same reservations about such players as some of the other and better franchises do.

Question: Other than his sideline antics, I don't think Hardy has shown enough to get a big multi year contract. Agree-disagree?

Gosselin: The Cowboys are 0-5 with him. He hasn't been a difference-maker when they needed him to come in and be a difference-maker. Let him walk.
