Sturm on Dez tirade: Football players burn hot when they get mad and this happens

Special Contributor Bob Sturm answered questions in a chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Is all the craziness in the lockeroom this year a result of their 2-6 record or are the non-stop distractions contributing to the 2-6 record?

Bob Sturm: Honestly, this happens every year. Good or bad season, there are always a handful of confrontations between player and player or player and media or player and coach. Yes, it is often a group of the same "usual suspects" involved, but as long as I have covered this team (1998), I swear it happens every year in some way, shape, or form. Obviously, you hear more and we print more when it is someone like Dez Bryant. But, football players burn hot when they get mad and this happens.

Question: What do you like about the way Byron Jones has been playing?

Bob Sturm: I am quite pleased with his rookie season. He clearly has phenomenal talents and should be a big part of things. I do feel like we are finding answers about his best position. He sure looks like a safety. As a corner, he had a few moments on Sunday where you saw that man-up against Jordan Matthews will be tough. But, man-up against a TE was doable. Yet, overall, I really like him as a ball-hawk, play-maker at the safety spot.

Question: So obviously the backup QB situation was a mess this year. Who is a backup out there the Cowboys could get in the offseason who could actually step in next year if Romo goes down again?

Bob Sturm: I think Matt Cassel can be my backup in 2016 if I wanted to roll with a veteran. He is fine as a backup. But, 2016 is absolutely a time where I would give big thought to a high pick on a QB. Also, we should not rule out the reclamation projects of the spring from appealing to the front office. There are always many who apply and the idea of getting someone off the scrap-heap, like the countless once-coveted prospects who might no longer warrant looks as starters right now, could very much appeal as well.

Question: Is T. Crawford misplaced as 3? Seems like he's been more of a power player, better suited to 1 in the Marinelli scheme.

Bob Sturm: I really wish I had a good theory on what has happened to Crawford. I don't think he has been bad, but he has made about half as many big splashes as last season at this point. I think he showed last year he is a solid 3-tech, but maybe, just maybe, you can push him to 1-tech and find a home for him, too. I really like him and now that they have paid him, they will be looking for the best fit. Weird year, for sure.

Question: I just can't roll with a guy who has a pick 6 in 2 of 3 starts. Both one possession losses.

Bob Sturm: Cassel? You have to remember - there are guys who are not NFL starters, but they are NFL players. I think Cassel is one of them. 32 starters, but 96 NFL QB jobs (potentially). He might just be #40 or even #50. He still is near the top end of backups who are no longer starting candidates. Niche, for sure, but there is a place for him and he is way more attractive than Weeden or Brad Johnson types for me.
