Jerry Jones on Randy Gregory: 'He may be an ugly baby, but he's our baby'

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Sunday night that he's not giving up on defensive end Randy Gregory. He repeated those thoughts during his Tuesday morning radio interview.

Despite the already suspended Gregory recently failing another drug test, the Cowboys owner and GM still sees last year's second-round pick contributing to the team in the future.

Jones would not confirm Tuesday that Gregory even had a drug test.

In regard to Gregory's off-field issues, Jones said on The Fan KRLD-FM 105.3: "He's our baby. He may be an ugly baby, but he's our baby."

Gregory is serving a 14-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. The new violation means he probably will face a one-year ban after the current suspension is served.

Jones said Sunday night that Gregory is still getting treatment.

"I really hope that he can continue to make progress," Jones said, "and I do not rule out Randy Gregory being on the field for the Cowboys."

Jones recently said that he wouldn't rule out Gregory or linebackers Jaylon Smith and Rolando McClain from contributing this season. It appears Gregory can be taken off that list, but do Smith and McClain still have a shot?

"I'm just going to give a yes," Jones said, "and then leave it at that."
