If 2016 becomes 'fork in the road' for Cowboys between Dak Prescott, Tony Romo, who do you want? Vote!

FRISCO -- The legend of Dak Prescott grows by the day.

A quarterback controversy doesn't need to be introduced into the conversation to burnish his credentials.

Suggesting Prescott and Tony Romo are on a collision course once the veteran quarterback returns is premature at best and deceptive at its core. Sure, it's fun to talk about in the wake of the rookie's performance and first NFL victory. But it's an argument built on supposition, the emotion of the moment and accurately predicting an array of variables over the next four to six weeks that simply can't be known.

How could it not? But let's take a closer look at the numbers and compare.

Prescott is 1-1. Romo is 15-4 over the last two seasons.

Prescott has completed 62.7 percent of his passes. Romo has been lower than 63 percent only once in his career and that was eight years ago.

Prescott is averaging 6.9 yards per attempt. Romo has averaged 7.9 yards per attempt for his career and never been below 7.2 yards.

Prescott has a quarterback rating of 83.1. Romo has a career rating of 97.1 and has been under 90 only once. That came in the clavicle-fracture disaster that was last season.

None of this diminishes what Prescott has done in the first two games. He's been outstanding. But it does give some context to the fabricated argument that a quarterback controversy looms on the horizon.

This season could turn out to be the fork in the road for this franchise. If Romo can't stay on the field -- he's been unable to finish three of the last five games he's started -- and perform at a high level, the transition to Prescott will begin sooner than later. But it's too early for anyone to declare that's how it will unfold.

Enjoy Prescott's performance and watch him develop. Take comfort in what it means for the Cowboys' future.

For these next few weeks, that should be enough.
