Source: Cowboys to visit with former Browns QB Austin Davis; Dak Prescott isn't expected to play in preseason finale

FRISCO -- In need of a quarterback to help get through Thursday's final preseason game, the Dallas Cowboys are bringing in Austin Davis for a visit Wednesday, according to a source.

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott isn't expected to play Thursday against Houston at AT&T Stadium. The only other healthy quarterback on the Cowboys' roster is Jameill Showers.

The Cowboys have been looking to add a veteran quarterback to the roster after Tony Romo was lost for six to 10 weeks with a fractured bone in his back.

If the Cowboys sign Davis on Wednesday, he could serve as Showers' backup Thursday against the Texans and then Dallas would have to make a decision on him by the final cuts deadline Saturday, when all NFL teams have to get down to 53 players.

Davis, 27, was released Monday by the Cleveland Browns. In three games last year with Cleveland, he was 56-of-94 passing for 547 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Davis was with St. Louis his first three years in the league. In 2014, Davis played in 10 games for the Rams, finishing 180-for-284 passing for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Davis lost both games he started late last season for the Browns. He went 3-5 in eight starts in 2014 with the Rams.

Davis started in Week 3 of 2014 for the Rams at home against the Cowboys. Dallas won, 34-31, but Davis finished 30-of-42 passing for 327 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.

Davis went undrafted in 2012 out of Southern Mississippi.
