Do Cowboys have concerns for Tony Romo's career? 'That's a fair question,' VP Stephen Jones says

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is motivated to return this season and hasn't given up on returning to the playoffs despite a broken bone in his back, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

"He's driven for this not to be like last year," Jones said Saturday after news broke of yet another back injury for the 36-year-old QB. "He's certainly not deterred. He feels like it's going to be different. That he can get through this.

"He also feels very confident our team can win games without him while he's not here. He's driven to help Dak win football games for us so when he gets back we have a great chance to have a great season, get in the tournament and contend for a championship, nothing's changed."

Rookie Dak Prescott, a fourth-round draft pick out of Mississippi State, is next in line as starter as this time. He's been a sensation through the preseason, but obviously hasn't played a regular season snap. The Cowboys went 1-11 last season without Romo, who twice suffered a fractured left clavicle.

Because of continued injury concerns for Romo, who suffered the broken bone just three plays into Thursday's preseason game, do the Cowboys have concerns for Romo's career?

"That's a fair question," Jones said. "Obviously questions are popping up with him. We're aware of that. He's aware of that. You also would like to think he's just having some bad luck and this thing will right itself at some point. Anybody would have to take a look at the point that he's starting to have some injuries. At the same time, we're supportive of him. Our focus is to get him healthy as soon as possible. In the meantime focus on the players that are here."

Jones said that the Cowboys are open to looking at adding another quarterback. With Romo out, only Prescott and second-year Jameill Showers remain healthy. Dallas lost backup Kellen Moore to a fractured ankle on Aug. 2.

"I will say that we'll look," Jones said. "Now we're getting down to where teams have to make their cuts and they'll have to make tough decisions, which all teams do. Do we keep young guys and cut old guys, do we keep older guys and cut young guys? We'll see what our options are in terms of what might be out there on the cuts and we'll also keep our options open if something happens to make sense from a trade standpoint. Then certainly we'll look at it and entertain it and see if it's the right fit for us."
