Machota: Dak Prescott, Nick Foles, and the Cowboys backup QB situation

Staff writer Jon Machota recently held a chat about all things Cowboys. Here are some highlights.

Question: Nick Foles is available, I hear. Whether there's real interest or not, I'm curious: How would he fit on this team, and what would his inclusion mean for Moore/Prescott?

Machota: I think there should be real interest in Foles. The problem for the Cowboys is that they haven't appeared willing to spend very much on the backup QB position. So how much are they willing to give him? Can he find a better deal somewhere else that also provides an opportunity to compete for a starting job? He hasn't been very good recently, but Foles was very good in 2013. If the Cowboys were to add a veteran QB, I don't believe it would have any impact on Prescott. I think it would be directly to battle with Kellen Moore for the veteran backup spot. As long as Prescott isn't a complete disaster during camp/preseason, he's making the 53-man roster.

Question: Have you had enough time to watch Dak Prescott to see if he could make a run at the backup job this year?

Machota: There hasn't been nearly enough time during OTAs and minicamp to make that assessment. The real test will be the preseason games. Since Romo won't be playing much during those four games, Prescott's going to have plenty of opportunities to show how close he is to playing in this league. This offense is so much different than what he ran in college. It's going to take him some time to get comfortable under center. But he'll be at his best, I think, when the pocket collapses and he's using his feet to either tuck it and run or buy time for receivers to get open. I was very impressed with his two-minute play during the Senior Bowl. I'm very interested to see how effective he'll be in those situations during the preseason and camp practices.

Question: What do you make of the Cowboys organization finding themselves with so many players with off-the-field issues? Any root cause?

Machota: Yeah, Jerry Jones is willing to take more risks than other owners in the league. That's not a secret. He's quite open about giving guys second chances. He often says that many of the biggest successes in his life have come from some of the biggest risks he's taken. Don't expect that to change.
