Ongoing legal battle between Tony Romo's fantasy football convention, NFL now involves restraining order

The ongoing legal battle between Tony Romo's National Fantasy Football Convention and the NFL now involves a restraining order.

Michael Hurst, the attorney representing Romo's company, Fan Expo, LLC, filed for a temporary restraining order Wednesday in Dallas County District Court against the NFL. The order requests that the NFL "immediately restrains from contacting any past or present NFFC sponsor or attendee in regard to the 2016 event."

A temporary injunction hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. May 11 to give the NFL a chance to "show cause, if any exist, why a temporary injunction should not be issued" against the league.

"The NFL is now trying to prevent the fans from enjoying the NFFC by going after its 2016 sponsors," Hurst said Wednesday. "We are proud to help the NFFC stand up to the NFL."

Romo was set to finally get a chance to host his NFFC event -- with more than 100 NFL players already lined up to attend -- on July 15-17 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, Calif. In addition to the Cowboys quarterback, several other Dallas players are scheduled to attend the NFFC event, including receivers Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley and tight end Jason Witten.

The inaugural NFFC event was scheduled for July 2015 in Las Vegas but was canceled after the NFL began discouraging players from attending because of where the event was being held.

In late February, the NFFC suffered a setback when a Dallas judge ruled in favor of the NFL, dismissing Fan Expo's tortious interference claim in the lawsuit Romo's company has against the league.

Fan Expo attorneys had argued that the NFL improperly contacted players last year through the NFL Players Association and their agents to get the inaugural event canceled.

The price range varies from $60 for an expo pass to $195 for a field pass and $795 for an MVP pass.
