Dallas Cowboys rookie DB Byron Jones 'reminded of how small the margin of error' is for a CB

IRVING -- Byron Jones gets it. From the moment he walked into Valley Ranch, he hasn't shied away from anything the Dallas Cowboys have thrown at him. And when the rookie defensive back has slipped up, he's owned it and learned from it.

The Cowboys had primarily used Jones - the club's first-round pick - at safety before Sunday at Miami. The Cowboys had Jones play outside cornerback for the first time in place of injured starter Morris Claiborne.

Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry caught a 47-yard pass in the second quarter against Jones and Miami receiver Kenny Stills had a 29-yard touchdown catch against the rookie in the third quarter. Both came with Jones in man-to-man coverage.

"I gave up two big plays," Jones said Monday. "That's something as a DB you can't do. I was reminded of how small the margin of error out there at cornerback is. Two bad plays can really change the whole game."

Jones is likely to start at outside cornerback again Thursday on short rest against Carolina. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on Monday on KRLD-FM that Claiborne is questionable.

"The fact that it's a short week doesn't make it any better," Stephen Jones said. "Had he had the full week, we'd feel more optimistic about it. It's still undecided."

Byron Jones injured his right ankle on the next-to-last play of the game Sunday but on Monday said he's fine.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Byron Jones' ankle "was a little bit sore."

"He's learning," Garrett said of Byron Jones' two big plays allowed. "He's getting better. He certainly plays with the right spirit. We like him a lot."

This will be the first time Byron Jones will experience playing on Thanksgiving four days after playing in a game.

"Yeah, I'm 23. Some guys in here are 32 and they may have a little harder time," Byron Jones said. "But I think we're all ready."
