Source: Texas coach Charlie Strong not interested in Miami job after report suggested otherwise

Update, 3:22 p.m. Thursday

A source close to the Texas program indicated Thursday that Charlie Strong is not interested in the head coaching job at Miami.

Strong's name has been repeatedly linked to the opening. The Miami Herald reported this week that people are Miami "are under the impression" that Strong and Cincinnati coach Tommy Tubeville are interested.

But the source indicated that Strong, who strongly denied interest initially, has not changed his mind. Strong is "very happy" at Texas, the source said.

Buried deep in a coaching-search update from the Miami Herald is a note that folks around the Miami Hurricanes program believe Texas coach Charlie Strong is interested in its head-coaching opening.

The article reports "UM people are under the impression" Strong has interest in the Miami job.

This comes less than three weeks after Strong boasted that he has the "best job in the country," laughing off questions of going to Miami.

Al Golden was fired Oct. 25 as Miami head coach after posting a mediocre 32-25 record and 0-2 mark in the postseason.

"No, I'm not going to Miami," Strong told reporters Oct. 26.

That, of course, won't stop speculation.

Strong, whose Longhorns are 4-5 and in serious danger of missing the postseason, has spent a good amount of time in the Sunshine State, serving on the Florida Gators coaching staff from 1991-94 and again from 2004-09.

Strong, who is in the second year of a lucrative five-year deal with Texas, is considered an appealing candidate to Miami if he and Texas part ways, according to the Herald.  Strong currently is one of the highest-paid head coaches in the country and would likely take a pay cut if he departed Texas on his own.

Butch Davis is the focal point of the article, but three other potential candidates are mentioned in the final paragraphs of the story, including former Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville.

Tuberville is in the same boat as Strong, according to the article, and is under the impression to those 'UM people' to have interest in the job. The Herald states a public denial would be expected out of Tuberville, too, but the current Cincinnati coach did once famously say, "They'll have to carry me out of here in a pine box" days before leaving Ole Miss for Auburn.
