Baylor, Oklahoma players and coaches react to Seth Russell's season-ending injury: 'It's devastating'

When Baylor QB Seth Russell went down with a broken leg in the third quarter, the outlook wasn't great. One replay was all it took for in-stadium crews to nix it from the Sooners' giant video board at the south end of the stadium.

Russell's foot rotated in a way it definitely shouldn't have, making it clear his senior season was over. Baylor coach Jim Grobe confirmed the news after the Bears' 45-24 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday.

"Right when he as being taken off the field, I told him to get back in there and throw a Flinstone band aid on there and get back out," Grobe said. "Apparently, band aids didn't do it."

Several Baylor players, as well as Oklahoma coaches and players, addressed Russell's injury postgame, too.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops

"I feel bad for their quarterback, Seth Russell. I hope he will heal up and that things will go well in how they manage that. Hated to see that happen. Hate to see that for any young man."

Baylor QB Zach Smith

"I was just kind of shocked. He's like a brother to me, the leader of this team. I was shocked and it just really hurt me for him, knowing what he's going through, what he went through last year to come all the way back to compete and just getting hurt again -- prayers out for him. Hopefully a strong recovery, fast recovery."

Baylor LB Aiavion Edwards

"I was hurt. I'm hurt for him. He's gone through a lot with the beck last year and this. You hate for a guy who works so hard and is such a great leader on the field to see something like that happen. He's positive right now about it but it's a big hit to our team."

Baylor WR/RB Blake Lynch

"It's devastating. He had that neck injury last year and bounced back and has been pretty good. He's a senior and these last few games meant a lot to him. We'll rally around him and make him feel better, but we've just got to keep pushing forward."

Oklahoma LB Jordan Evans

"It’s just tough to see that, especially that kind of an injury and what he came from last year. He’s actually a good friend of my cousin, Tyler Jackson. Seeing that ... just say a prayer and hope the best for him."

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield

"Pretty gruesome. You hate it for a guy like Seth, because he’s such a good guy. More unfortunate because he had the neck injury last year. You hate it for a guy like that, but he’s going to handle it really well. He always does. That’s the way he handles everything."
